With the summer coming to an end and football season right around the corner, it is probably hard to think about the upcoming NHL season, but for the true die-hards, it’s hard to think about anything else. The good news is that NBC is going all-in on hockey this season, releasing their most diverse schedule of nationally-televised games since the powerhouse network acquired the league’s broadcasting rights from ABC in 2006.
From young stars like Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid to established superstars like Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL on NBC will have a star-studded cast of athletes scattered across its 2017-2018 regular season schedule. Whether you’re a Blackhawks fan living in Arizona or just a hockey fan curious about the expansion team from Las Vegas, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see your favorite teams on national TV.
Every U.S.-based team will be featured on NBC throughout the regular season, and at least 53 of NBC’s 99 national telecasts will feature at least one Western Conference team. The Blackhawks lead all teams with 17 regular season appearances, followed by the Penguins and Flyers at 16. The Capitals, Red Wings, and Bruins will all appear 15 times on NBC and NBCSN, while the Las Vegas Golden Knights will be features just five times in their inaugural season.
Notable regular season matchups on NBC include some of the fiercest rivalries in the NHL. Among the 23 Wednesday Night Rivalry games featured on the NBC networks will be Penguins-Capitals, Blues-Blackhawks, and Canadiens-Bruins. NBC Sports Network will broadcast seven games in the opening week of the 2017-18 season including the season-opener between the Blues and defending champion Penguins, the Red Wings’ inaugural home game at the new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, and the first ever home game of the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres at Citi Field in New York City will be televised on NBC New Year’s Day. NBC will also air the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series between the Maple Leafs and Capitals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland on March 3, 2018. Finally, NBC will air coverage from the 2018 NHL All Star Weekend in Tampa, Florida on January 27 and 28.
